Every sex crime lawyer knows all too well: regardless of where it occurs, guilty pleas or convictions for sex crimes will have a significant impact on the defendant’s life. In Michigan, the Sex Offender Registration Act requires these individuals to submit personal information to a large public database called the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry. In short, this is an extensive list of Michigan residents who have pled guilty to—or have been convicted of—certain crimes that are sexual in nature.

In mid-October, Michigan Police are launching a statewide sweep searching for convicted sex offenders who have neglected to comply with the requirements of the Sex Offender Registry.

Out-of-state police have arrested a 35 year-old Michigan woman for enticing an underage person to engage in sexual activity. The suspect and the victim met each other in 2009 through the popular Internet game “World of Warcraft.”

A 14-year Wayne County Police veteran is currently facing 11 felony counts after assaulting a relative and holding her at gun point, forcing the victim to engage in sexual acts.

Being convicted of sex crimes will haunt you for years, as probationary terms can often restrict one’s comings and goings. A perfect example is seen in the recent case of a convicted Michigan sex offender who was arrested after taking his children to see a popular children’s movie, ultimately violating the terms of his probation.

Being suspected of a sex crime is a serious accusation, particularly if the victim in question is under the age of 18. For repeat offenders of sex with minors, the consequences are even greater, as seen by the recent case of Dennis Malone, accused of sexually molesting teens.
