The Cops Tricked me Into Talking to Them! What Should I do Now? (Pt 1)

If you’re a suspect, the cops are going to try to get you to talk…. by any means necessary!

Although cops in movies are often portrayed as bumbling morons, the truth is that most cops are pretty good at what they do. And when you think about it, what they do is primarily aimed at figuring out who did what to whom, and then gathering enough evidence to prove it. But that’s where things get tricky – in order to figure out who did what and then prove it, they often have to get people to confess to a crime. And that’s hard, because most people aren’t just going to jump up and shout, “I did it! It was me!”.

Cops can be very sneaky.

If a cop thinks you did something, and he needs you to admit it because he doesn’t have enough other evidence to prove his theory, he (or she) tries to get you to talk. And who wants to go on record admitting to breaking the law, when they know it’s going to get them nothing but an ugly orange outfit and a long staycation behind bars? No one. So cops have to rely on certain tactics and sneaky ploys to get people to admit what they did.

How do the cops get you to tell them things?

There are lots of ways that cops use to get people to share information or make confessions.

The four most common methods used are:

  • The Reid Technique
  • The PEACE Technique
  • Misconception
  • Consideration and Warnings

Let’s take a look at the Reid Technique…

One of the methods more commonly used by police in Lansing, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Midland,  Mt. Pleasant and the surrounding areas, is called the Reid Technique. This is where officers present an understanding and compassionate front to a suspect in an effort to gain their trust and get them to share damning details. An officer will also suggest reasons for why the crime was committed, but frame them in such a way that they sound entirely reasonable and relatable. The officer also states the facts of the crime as if the suspect’s guilt is already a forgone conclusion.

The most important thing to remember when you’re arrested…

We can’t stress this enough! The most important thing you have to remember when you’re arrested, is NOT to talk to the police! Don’t try to explain anything. Don’t argue with them about incorrect information. Don’t set the record straight. Just call your defense attorney and then wait for us to arrive. Only once we’re there, and we’ve have a conversation with you about what’s going on, and we can be present with you while you answer questions, if we say ANYTHING to an officer! So, rule number one is pretty simple. You have the right to remain silent. Lawyer up!
