Welcome back and thanks for joining us again at The Kronzek Firm. We’ve been discussing the difficulty faced by a great many women (and also some men) when their partners threaten them. As we mentioned in the previous article, there are a startling number of people who have been threatened by a boyfriend or spouse.
Unfortunately, for many people whose intimate partners have threatened to hunt them down (which is stalking) or physically assault them if they try to leave, it’s a very scary situation. As a result, there are many women who are afraid to leave unhappy and even dangerous relationships. But stalking and assault aren’t the only concerns for people in relationships with unstable and violent partners.
My boyfriend said if I ever leave he’s going to put naked pictures of me online
Revenge porn is a growing problem, both here in Michigan and around the world. Revenge porn, by definition, is the public posting of pictures or videos that depict someone in a sexual way, but without their permission. This could mean creating a false ad page or online dating profile that includes the victim’s personal identifying information so that they are then harassed by others who contact them inappropriately.
Or, it could mean uploading sexually compromising videos or pictures of them to websites like Pornhub, where anyone can contribute content and millions of viewers will watch and download that data daily. Either way, revenge porn is illegal under Michigan law. Anyone found to have shared sexually explicit images of someone else without their permission will face felony criminal charges, and could end up behind bars.
My boyfriend said if I ever leave he’s going to kill me
This has to be one of the scariest threats to have someone make against you. Being afraid for your life is a terrible feeling, and never knowing if you are actually in danger of being murdered, or even badly assaulted, is extremely stressful. Here in Michigan it’s illegal to threaten to kill someone, or even just to threaten violence against them, even if the intent isn’t to cause their death. Even threatening to damage your private property is against the law in Michigan.
So if your boyfriend or spouse has told you that they’ll find you and kill you if you leave, they’ve broken the law. We understand it can be scary to leave an abusive partner, but there are shelters you can stay at, and organizations that will help you restart your life in safety. Also, your ex may face criminal charges if you report them. Just remember, never lie to the police! If you weren’t threatened, then don’t claim you were as an act of revenge. Your plan could easily backfire, and you could be the one facing criminal charges in the end! Filing a false police report is a serious business. Don’t do it.
