How Are The Michigan Courts Handling My Case During The Quarantine Period?

We are living in a difficult time. People are trapped in their homes with their families, waiting out a potentially deadly disease, and we have no idea when it’s all going to end. As with everything, there is a beginning, a middle and an end. However, while we’re all trying to get along and survive this quarantine as best as we can, life must go on in some capacity. And for people dealing with the police, the courts, and the criminal justice system here in Michigan, that can bring a lot of confusion.

You probably have so many questions about criminal cases in Michigan

What happens if you get arrested during quarantine? Will you still get a hearing? Are the courts even working right now? People have so many questions, and so little information seems to be available, leaving everyone confused and unsure. Here at The Kronzek Firm, we’d like to answer your questions, and explain the process you’re involved in right now. But let’s start with a few basics…

What we’re doing here at The Kronzek Firm:

During this health emergency, the Kronzek Firm is up and running remotely. Our criminal defense attorneys including our whole team, are doing virtual consultations and accepting new clients, while we continue providing top-of-the-line service to our existing clients. If you have questions, or need legal help, we can discuss your situation by phone, or via video conferencing services like Zoom. Although we are doing our very best to stay safe ourselves, and to keep our clients safe as well, we are still available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help. Call our main office at 866-766-5245 if you are being investigated for a crime or if you have been charged with a crime here in the lower peninsula of The Great Lakes State. It is preferable to call during normal business hours if possible although clients do hire us even on weekends and in the evenings.

What the courts are doing around Michigan:

On March 23rd, 2020, Governor Whitmer’s executive order came out, requiring that people shelter in their homes and only essential businesses remain open. On the same day, the Michigan Supreme Court issued an Administrative Order that limited trial courts around the state to essential functions only. Although closing the courts completely simply isn’t possible, as Chief Justice McCormack has explained, she also issued a memo to all chief judges, court administrators, and probate registers which encouraged the various courts to embrace remote proceedings as often as possible during this time.

Video conferencing options for court hearings:

Although each county’s court system is handling things a little differently, many of the county courts have made a concerted effort to do as many of their hearings as possible using remote functions. This means that in many cases we are able to file motions, meet with clients, appear before judges in Livingston, Eaton, Ingham, Jackson, Lenawee, Allegan, Wexford, Midland and Shiawassee Counties for hearings, and get your case properly handled without ever jeopardising anyone’s health or wellbeing. Hearings are still taking place all over Michigan through video conferencing, mostly Zoom, and cases are still able to be quickly handled, all while respecting the need for safe distancing practices. All of our counties have set policies and our criminal defense team stays current with each of them.

Regardless of your situation, we can help you during this time.

Here at The Kronzek Firm, we pride ourselves on being adaptable and flexible, while maintaining our dedication to excellence. Our criminal defense attorneys are some of the most respected in the state, and we have a long-standing reputation for getting things done properly and efficiently, regardless of the obstacles that pop up along the way.
