Hi there and welcome back from the criminal defense lawyers here at The Kronzek Firm. We’ve been talking about what you need to look for in a criminal defense attorney when you are either being investigated for a crime or if you’ve been charged with a crime in Michigan. When either of those things happens, you need to hire an aggressive criminal defense attorney. Here at The Kronzek Firm we believe there are at least six things you should look for in your future criminal defense lawyer. We looked at three of them last time, namely their reputation, your ability to be honest with them, and their area of expertise. Moving forward, we’d like to wrap this up with three more things you should prioritize on your hunt for a good attorney-client match.
4. Honesty is the best policy (yes, even with lawyers!)
We’ve heard it all before – that lawyers are liars, and that you can’t trust anything an attorney says to you because all they care about is money. But that’s simply not true with our criminal lawyers. There are honest people and dishonest people in all walks of life, and so one of the things you need to do is make sure the attorney you choose is going to be honest with you. How can you do that? Well, some of that has to do with reputation. (What do their previous clients say about them?) But a lot of it can be determined by just listening to what they say to you during your free consultation. Do they feed you a line about how “everything will be okay” and you “don’t need to worry because I’ll handle this”. Or, do they break it all down for you, explain all the details (including the uncomfortable ones) and give you a realistic breakdown of your likely outcome, even if it isn’t a best case scenario? If so, you know you’ve found an honest lawyer. Look for an attorney that will give you both the good and the bad things in your case.
5. Your attorney’s attitude and approach makes a difference.
A meek or overly deferential attorney might be loved by the prosecution, but they certainly aren’t going to do your case any favors! A good criminal defense attorney needs an aggressive attitude with a go-get-’em approach to handling their client’s needs. There are a lot of challenges to be overcome when handling a criminal case, and a lot of moving parts that need to be kept running smoothly if you’re going to any hope of success. So, it’s critical that you choose an attorney who can keep multiple balls in the air, so to speak. Look for a warrior to lead up your criminal defense team. Being able to aggressively multi-task, think outside the box, and approach problem-solving in a creative way are all hallmarks of a good criminal defense attorney. (And we just happen to specialize in all three!) We can be reached by calling our main office at 866 766 5245 (866 7NoJail).
6. Keeping your personal needs in mind is important.
A good attorney recognizes that while they can do a lot for their client, they can’t do everything. A person facing a criminal charge is likely to be under a lot of strain. So a good criminal defense attorney will go out of their way to keep their client informed as the case develops and changes, which always helps to keep anxiety at bay. Nothing causes more stress for a person facing criminal charges than feeling helpless, and not knowing what’s going on. Stress has a very unhealthy impact on the mind and body, which means you may suffer major mental health challenges during this time. A good attorney can see when their client is nearing the breaking point, and will recommend that they seek out the support of a therapist to help them navigate the emotional complexities of this process, and keep them from falling apart.
Here are a few more things to look for:
- An attorney that is well respected by the prosecuting attorney.
- A criminal defense team that is well respected by the judge.
- A defense lawyer that has worked with expert witnesses that might be needed to defend you. These might include forensic scientists, psychologists, fingerprint experts, DNA analyst, blood splatter expert or polygraph administrators.
The attorney you choose impacts the course of your future, so choose well!
