Can I Fire My Court Appointed Attorney And Hire a Good Lawyer Instead? (Pt 2)

pile of files

Public defenders are drowning in cases. They don’t have time to defend you properly!

Welcome back. We’ve been talking about why court appointed attorneys are often a bad choice (if you were hoping for a good defense!). If you just found this and you missed the first article, we’ll wait a moment until you get caught up… There, you ready? Let’s pick up where we left off last time, with how to get rid of your court appointed attorney, and get yourself a lawyer that will effectively and aggressively fight for you.

Defending someone properly is not cheap, or easy!

We don’t want to sound like we’re trash talking the Michigan court appointed attorneys, because we’re not. We understand that they’re swamped with clients and poorly paid – their fees couldn’t support a family of four. But we know for a fact that if you’ve been accused of a crime, and you think that you can’t afford to hire an attorney, what you really can’t afford, is not to hire your own attorney! (Having to pay off a loan is a lot less awful than spending a decade in prison!)

But what if you’ve already been assigned a public defender?

Okay, so you got arrested and you thought about how expensive a good attorney was going to be, and you decided to take a risk and take the free lawyer. Now, after your court appointed attorney didn’t show up for your first hearing (because they were probably already in a different court, attending to one of the many other cases they got this month), you’re beginning to reconsider. Maybe this whole free lawyer thing wasn’t such a good idea after all. No kidding, right? But what do you do?

How do you go about switching attorneys?

Easy. You just call up a reputable criminal defense attorney who has loads of good reviews and a reputation for getting great results, and tell them you want to hire them to defend you. There, that wasn’t so hard, was it? And what about your court appointed attorney? Well, what about them? Your new criminal defense attorney will let them know that you no longer need their services, and get whatever paperwork and court documents they may have had on your case. And as for that public defender, they won’t miss you. They probably won’t even notice that you’re gone.

This is your future you’re gambling with here.
