In February 2010, Joseph Bird, the owner of T&J Towing Company, threatened a lawsuit against Kurtz if he did not take the Facebook group offline–apparently, the business was losing customers as a result of the negative Internet exposure. Even though Kurtz maintains that he took his complaints online simply to see if anyone else felt similarly, the trash-talked towing company sued the WMU junior on Michigan libel charges, amounting to $750,000.
